What I Wish I’d Known Before My First Padel Match

If I could go back to my very first padel match, there are a few things I’d gently whisper to myself — and I’m sharing them with you now.

  1. Nobody expects you to be good
Truly. Everyone was once a beginner. Missing shots is part of the game. Laugh it off and keep going.
  2. Padel is about patience, not power
You don’t need to hit hard. You need to think, place the ball, and work with your partner. Calm wins more points than strength.
  3. Etiquette matters more than winning
Say sorry if you hit someone. Encourage your partner. Respect your opponents. These things are remembered far longer than the score.
  4. You are allowed to take up space
You don’t need to apologise for learning. You belong on that court just as much as anyone else.
  5. The social side is everything
Padel is friendships, coffees after matches, WhatsApp groups, laughter, and shared progress. Embrace it — this is where the magic happens.

I made every mistake possible when I started. And honestly? I’m grateful for them. They made me a better player, a better coach, and a better human.

If your first match is coming up, take a breath.
Enjoy it.
This could be the beginning of something very special.
